Homeowners are often interested in ideas that further increase the value of their homes especially if they can do so with a tight budget. Additionally, select home projects can be done yourself which will save you more money while making your home an even nicer place to live. If you are looking to give your home a little facelift or if you are preparing for a sale, here is a list of DIY ideas that can add value to your home.

Front Door – Is your front door plain, boring or beat up? Consider updating it to a decorative one perhaps with a glass insert or detail. The front door is the first and last thing all buyers will see when they preview your home.

Door Mat – Don’t stop at just your door replacement. Investing in a large and fresh door mat will provide a warm and welcoming introduction of your home.

Window Treatments – If you have basic shades or blinds, consider upgrading to some nicer wood styles or even fabric drapes that have decorative rods. The enhanced function can introduce color and life into your room’s decor.

Paint – A little paint goes a long way. A room that is painted with neutral colors will not only look fresh but will also appeal to a larger crowd if you are considering a sale in the near future. Lighter colors help create an illusion for more space for your smaller rooms.

Fixtures – Updating dated or worn fixtures. This includes your switch plates, outlet covers, doorknobs, curtains and light fixtures. All of these items can be relatively inexpensive but bring your home into modern day looking fresh.

Closet Systems – Closets that are tidy and organized always appear larger and more accommodating. Try installing a storage system that will keep all of your belongings organized.

Ceiling fans – Keep your home’s air circulating by adding in ceiling fans. This will provide enhanced aesthetics, but the function is an added value for keeping things cool.

Bathrooms – Don’t forget your bathroom’s fixtures. Old, worn or outdated fixtures can really make your bathroom look old and even dirty. Towel bars, shower heads and even vanity hardware can all make a difference when replaced.

Hardware – Older hardware can make your cabinets look older and cheap. For a little money you can install some modern knobs and pulls that will have an effect on the whole room giving a much needed improvement.

Crown Moldings – Installing crown moldings for your ceilings adds character and luxury at a small cost. This wood can be bought at your local hardware store and installed with a nail gun. If you have the right tools and put in the extra effort, this can be an inexpensive way to add great value to your home.
